Does platforms such as YouTube and Twitter really have the power to
censor what content we or can not see? At least in America, the
suppression of disturbing or offensive content, if it does not incite
violence, is a direct violation of the principles of freedom of
expression. Especially when it seems deeply inappropriate to respond
to authoritarianism with authoritarian measures.
Not everyone is happy with the true ability of the major social media
companies central control over the actions of its users. How while
social media such as Facebook and Twitter have grown in popularity,
alternative locations including Friendica and RedMatrix social
platforms with more user privacy and freedom of expression were
atttracting.
"There is no central authority," said Mike Macgirivin, the main
developer and global coordinator Friendica and RedMatrix.
User can be connected to the Friendica network in two ways. You can
download the free open source software on your own server, or they can
create an account on one of the free public servers create. "You will
be provided to volunteers and for to pay out of pocket for the benefit
of free access," says Macgirvin.
RedMatrix that uses Friendica the software is in a similar manner,
though with greater privacy protection and integrated profile backup
functions.
This kind of infrastructure networks places for dissidents welcome
speech held. But if ISIS propaganda appeared unexpectedly on the
sides, leaving it to get worried about the legal difficulties and the
safety of other users, many members.
It is true that extremist groups have been known to use social media
as a means to use the controls media organizations to circumvent stop
the spread of propaganda. But since when the label is already a
sufficient reason for the censorship at all? The percentage of online
content that could wipe of social media, if this argument was
uniformly applied would be stunning.
It really is not Twitter's decision either-unless we empower tech
giant, public discourse and want to grant a dangerous precedent in
fact control. Twitter has become a global political power delivery
right time information and the coordination of measures to conflicts
such as Egypt's Arab Spring protests or in Ukraine. Its democratic
power derives from the fact that it is unfinished; for better or for
worse, it is the voice of the people. If Twitter wants to have
political significance, if it wants to be more than a platform for Kim
Kardashian vanity, it's not a choice to participate in the political
events.
